Marine Biological Laboratory appoints new director of development

Pamela Clapp Hinkle new Director of Development and External Relations

Pamela Clapp Hinkle of Plymouth, MA has been named the Marine Biological Laboratory’s (MBL) new Director of Development and External Relations.

A Cape Cod native, Hinkle earned a B.S. in biology from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She joined the MBL in 1982 as assistant editor of the MBL’s international journal, "The Biological Bulletin," and has served the laboratory in a variety of capacities over the last 26 years.

Hinkle has managed the MBL’s Science Journalism Program since its founding in 1986 In 1989 she was promoted to Managing Editor of "The Biological Bulletin." Since 1992 she has served as the laboratory’s Director of Communications, with oversight for 'The Biological Bulletin" as well as all MBL publications and collateral, its web site, media relations, special events, and public outreach activities.

Hinkle was also highly involved in the development of the MBL’s Strategic Plan and in implementing the laboratory’s Image and Identity initiative. Under her leadership, the laboratory redesigned its web site and launched "MBL Catalyst" magazine.

In addition to maintaining the position of Director of Communications, Hinkle has been serving as Acting Director of External Affairs since September 2007.

“Over the last year, Pam has played a vital role in the development of a number of important new MBL initiatives including the creation of the Board of Overseers advisory group, the successful expansion of MBL’s government relations program, and implementation of the initial stages of a major fundraising campaign,” says MBL Director and CEO Gary G. Borisy. “Pam’s successful record leading the MBL’s communications and public relations efforts, combined with her knowledge of the laboratory, its inner workings, and its constituents make her a key asset to the MBL and the External Relations team.’

In her new position, Hinkle will be responsible for all aspects of communications, fundraising, government and external relations in support of the MBL's mission and strategic direction as well as for stimulating the involvement and interest of an ever-growing support base of alumni, donors, and friends. Working closely and strategically with Borisy and the Board of Trustees, Hinkle will plan and implement annual and long-range external relations strategies and oversee all private support for the laboratory.
